Peddocks Full Moon 3'x4'
Every day and every night I look out onto Peddocks island from most windows of my house. It is my favorite of the Boston Harbor islands, with as rich a human history as its varied terrain and landscape. From the tip of Hull, Peddocks is quite literally, a stones throw but the short expanse of water under that stone is a death trap. That narrow pass of water is known as the Gut and it is treacherous at the best of times. The Gut is deep and the whole of the Boston harbor is pushed and pulled through it all day, every day as the tide ebbs and flows. The proximity of Peddocks to the main land makes it familiar but the dangerous crossing to and from the island set it apart. It is a mysterious island- wild and also cultivated.
Sitting squarely in my view is the peddocks church upon the shore of the ‘cultivated’ side of the island. Day and night, its starkness against the landscape stands out in a way both beautiful and so very out of place. On a full moon night, the white is even more prominant against the shadow of the island and the water reflects the glowing moon and surrounding clouds.
