'Ocean Totems'
‘Ocean Totems’ were born from my collection of washed ashore damaged buoys. In past works, I have used pieces of the exterior or buoys, incorporating their color and patina into my paintings. But this left me with a problem- a pile of buoys, the bulk of which I haven’t used aside from exterior shavings.
Also being a wood worker, it occurred to me that perhaps I could carve the bouys and so, one by one, I began to painstakingly shape the buoys into round shapes that resonated with me. I stacked them upon old refinished boat blocks and brought them back to life with bright contrasting colors to mimic the beauty of buoys.
In every space, there is always a lonely corner- a space not conducive to hanging works of art but calls for attention nonetheless. ‘Ocean Totems’ can occupy that space, giving life, color, and a contemporary pop where it is so needed.
