Ornamental 'necklace'
I have a seemingly endless and, sadly, ever increasing supply of what I believe to be sea floor net trolling wheels. From what I’ve been told, these rubber ‘donuts’ are attached to the net line so that it will roll easily across the bottom while also weighing the net down. There are just so so many- I cannot imagine how many nets are out there scraping the sea bottom given the ‘donuts’ constant appearance on the beach.
I’ve been collecting them for a few years, finding them strangely beautiful when they are no longer marine debris or participating in harmful fishing. Each ‘donut’ is a different size and thickness. Their edges are woven with varying amounts of discolored off white thread.
While I was cleaning my studio- sorting trash, dumping bags of new trash and categorizing in preparation for a new large painting, I distracted myself with this project. I studied non-western body art practices / indigenous art and these rubber donuts reminded me of oversized beads I’ve seen used in some African hunter gatherer cultures. Stung together, I love how they look. While the necklaces would be possible to wear, they are really more decorative. They have a cool look hanging on my bathroom wall, their shape complimenting my vanity mirrors.
