Cormorant Migration 3'x3'
The great cormorant migration is a magnificent even that spans the first few months of fall. Ever day, flocks that could be in the thousands strong, fly low above the ocean’s surface. They circle, testing their wings, the air, the currents, their inner compass (and much more, I am sure) in preparation for departure and then one day, they are gone. It is spectacular to witness.
This painting was done on the run up to the 2020 election. I envisioned the cormorants in color- taking their beauty and diversity with them as they migrated to a better place. Each bird is unique, free hand cut from random pieces of plastic found on the beach. Some are raised off the surface of the painting. As sunlight travels across the paintings surface, and electric light reflects upon it, the shadow of the raised birds travels across the painting so that it is ever changing and in motion.
