Hope/Dread 4'x5'
Each of my paintings makes a statement about the pollution of our oceans in the hope of creating awareness in order to drive solutions. Otherwise, I generally keep politics out of my work but this piece(as well as my cormorant migration painting) is a rare exception
The words ‘Hope, Dread’ reflect my state of mind on election day. The image is my view from my kitchen window of the tip of Hull looking out onto Boston and the horizon. As if in response to all the political turmoil taking place, a voluminous dark brooding cloud hung over the city- an overshadowing of the dread I felt. But the lower sky above the horizon, around Boston, was bright and hopeful. It is a cliché metaphor, I know. Nonetheless, it inspired me into a frenzy of work resulting in what you see.
The materials used are written across the bottom which I do in each piece and include:
plastic sheeting
plastic bobber buoy
traffic cone
lobster trap
glove
rope
fishing knots
packaging material
foam buoy
plywood
plastic utensils
Construction debris includes:
